Willie James Blyther Obituary

Mr. Willie J. Blyther, 92, of Aberdeen, North Carolina entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at his residence in Aberdeen, North Carolina.

Willie James Blyther was born on January 23, 1932, to the late Abraham and Hattie Blyther in Moore County, North Carolina. He was called home on May 23, 2024.

Willie was born and raised in Aberdeen, North Carolina. He attended Berkeley High School and worked several jobs until he joined the military. He served in the United States Army for two years.  He fought in the Korean War. He said the flight to Korea was his first and last flight. He vowed he would never fly again, and he didn’t! He took a ship back to the United States.

Willie James Blyther was also known as Bill to most of his friends and family; some of his siblings called him Bruh. He was a caring, kind, humble, generous soul. He would always help you;  strangers, friends, family, whoever, however, whenever he could, he would. If he saw a need, or if you asked him, he would gladly help. That’s just who he was! If you knew him, you loved him! He had a heart of Gold!

After the military, he moved to New York, where he met Annie Moore, the mother of his children. He then met the love of his life, his wife Helen Blyther in 1962. They were together for 45 years, until she was called home.

He worked for the State of New York in the Transportation Department for twenty-five years. Once he retired, he moved back to his hometown, Aberdeen. Once there, he enjoyed meeting up with is friends at the local gas station (the same thing he did through the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s in New York). They would meet daily from 7:00 am until 9:00 am, drinking coffee, laughing, and talking and having a good time until 9:00 am. Then they would disperse, heading into the store to get their scratch-off tickets. Most of them would then go home. He often went to sit in the park and watch  people fishing or just enjoyed taking in the scenic view.

His two brothers, Abraham Blyther and Edmund Blyther, four sisters, Betty Barkley, Hattie Blyther Wike, Novella Purcell, and Luvicy Blyther-Coleman, preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn, a son, Daryl James Moore of New York; a daughter, Gayle Bradshaw of Georgia; four sisters, Mammie Perkins and Anne Purcell, both of Aberdeen, North Carolina, Vincentia Johnson (Jerome) of Raeford, North Carolina, and Cornelia Blyther of Brooklyn, NY; four grandchildren, Daryl Moore Jr., Unique Bellrise, Skylar Hatch, and Jordan Moore; three great-grandchildren, he loved all his nieces and nephews  immensely; he loved and appreciated all of his family and friends.

Willie was a gift and a blessing to us all. He will truly be missed. A special thanks to his sister, Ann Purcell, for being a wonderful caregiver until the end!

Please keep the family and friends of Mr. Willie J. Blyther in your thoughts and prayers.

Arrangements are entrusted to McLeod Funeral Home of Southern Pines, North Carolina.
