"Everything has its time, and there is a season for every purpose under the heavens." Ecclesiastes 3:1
On September 4, 2023, the hands of destiny gently guided Terrance Brown, affectionately known as "TB, " from his earthly journey to the realm of eternal serenity.
Terrance entered our world on May 6, 1956, as a cherished gift to Jewel Chisholm and Willie Smith (deceased). She lovingly called her firstborn her "little possum, " while he affectionately referred to her as "Mother Dear, " often presenting her with bouquets of flowers. His educational path led him to Pinecrest High School, where he graduated in 1975. During his high school years, Terrance worked as both a busboy and a bus driver. While serving as a busboy at the Southern Pines Elks Lodge (formerly named Elks Club) , he openly expressed his dream of becoming an airplane pilot and pursued studies at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro. His educational journey also led him to pursue studies at Sandhills Community College.
Upon returning to Southern Pines from Goldsboro, Terrance transitioned to a role as a cook at the Elks Lodge. He also worked as a CNA at the Greens of Pinehurst, NC (formerly known as ManorCare). he soon discovered that his passion for nurturing and caring for people was best expressed through culinary artistry. It was during his time at Manorcare, in 1983 that he met his wife. While at the Elks Lodge, Terrance encountered a mentor who helped him realize his deep-seated desire to become a chef.
Fueled by this newfound passion, Terrance refined his culinary skills through various cooking schools in North Carolina and Florida (though he wasn't particularly fond of Florida). His culinary education reached its pinnacle at the Culinary Institute of America in Atlanta. Terrance's artistic expression extended even into the realm of professional ice sculpting during his tenure as a chef at the Elks Lodge. He showcased his culinary prowess by earning silver, bronze, and gold medals at prestigious cooking competitions in Charlotte and Greensboro, North Carolina. His culinary journey eventually led him to Las Vegas, where he served as a Master Chef for 18 years at the renowned Joël Robuchon restaurant located at the MGM Grand Resort Casino. While he excelled in crafting numerous exquisite dishes, his true forte was in French cuisine. In the world of gastronomy,
Terrance found his true love and flourished as a master of culinary artistry. He garnered immense respect and admiration, even being invited to serve as the 2nd Alternate Chef for the 2008 Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany.
Terrance leaves behind a lasting legacy, treasured by his mother, Jewel (Vernice) Chisholm of Southern Pines, NC. His beloved and only daughter, Tarnisha (Jason) Semedo of Accokeek, MD, continues his lineage, as do his adored grandchildren: Jason Tavares "LJ" Semedo, Jordynn Brianah Semedo, and Joshua Tavares Semedo. The tapestry of his life is further enriched by his dear and devoted siblings: Carolina Brown of Virginia Beach, VA; Claudette (Titus) Jackson of HALLSBORO,NC; Willadean (John) Hammond of Addor, NC; Jacqueline (Mark) Brooks of Fayetteville, NC (his youngest sister); Kent (Eugenia) Chisholm of Portsmouth, VA; and John (Sharon) Chisholm of Laurinburg, NC (his youngest brother). Terrance's memory also extends to Peggy Brown, daughters Monique (Fred) Jackson and Glenda Kernahan, son Seneca Kernahan, a bonus daughter Schneka Hines, grandchildren Kelvin "Boosie" Jones, Julius Jackson, a bonus granddaughter Riley Hines, as well as his great-granddaughter, Aubrey Jackson, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.
For those who had the privilege of knowing him intimately, Terrance, or "TB, " embraced a unique philosophy on life, one steeped in gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon him. He loved his family wholeheartedly, expressing it in his own distinctive way, devoid of judgment and accepting people for who they were. He believed in living in the moment, feeling that the world was meant to be explored, and encouraged others to embrace new experiences. Terrance would readily share his last dime with loved ones, with no regard for his own well-being.
Today, we celebrate his life, highlighting his accomplishments and the boundless love he showered upon those around him. Terrance will forever dwell in our hearts.
Terrance was preceded in death by his grandparents, Rosco and Loraine Brown, his beloved "Old Man" John Chisholm, and his grandson, Jamal Jackson.
