Shirley Mae (Lawrence) Swann Obituary

Ms. Shirley Swann 85, of Sanford, North Carolina entered into eternal rest on Thursday April 2, 2026, at UNC REX Hospital, Raleigh, North Carolina.

With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life and legacy of a remarkable woman of God, a devoted wife, and a loving mother. Shirley Mae Swann went home to be with the Lord on April 2, 2026, at the age of 85. She was the embodiment of grace, strength, and warmth. Her life was rooted in faith, family, and fellowship. A devoted servant of God, Shirley was a faithful member of Mt Nebo FWB Church. She passionately served on the Usher Board and was a member of the Legendary Gospel Keys and served where needed.

Shirley was born on April 29, 1940, to the late Martha Lawrence and the late Curtis O. Watson, Sr. She grew up in Lemon Springs, NC. She was a proud alumna of W.B. Wicker School in Sanford, NC. She enjoyed attending reunions and celebrating with fellow alums.

Shirley married James O. Swann and raised their children in Sanford, NC. Shirley was employed at Dr. Dotterer’s office, Eaton Inc., and Coty, Inc., with a notable 25-year tenure at Coty, Inc., until her retirement.

Shirley was a caring and nurturing soul who placed her family at the center of everything she did. As a mother, she gave endlessly—offering wisdom, comfort, and unwavering support (frequently reminding her college-educated grandchildren that her education at W.B. Wicker made her intellectually superior). She didn’t just raise children; she uplifted generations with a love that made everyone feel like family. Her home was always open, filled with laughter, good food, and usually a basketball or football game on TV. Go Heels! Go Washington Redskins!

Shirley also enjoyed traveling. She was an original member of the family travel group affectionately known as “The Get Fresh Crew” – the seasoned members of the family who required customized accommodations and amenities to keep them comfortable and happy on adventures. Typically, the most patient members of the family (Mark and Bootsie) assumed responsibility for their care. Shirley embraced every opportunity to see the world, explore new places, and experience different cultures. From quick weekend getaways to long, memorable journeys, she carried her vibrant spirit wherever she went, leaving a little bit of her light in every place she visited.

Her presence was magnetic—full of charm, laughter, and genuine kindness. Her legacy is one of love, resilience, and joy. She taught those around her the importance of showing up for one another, celebrating life’s moments, and holding onto faith through it all. A true social butterfly at heart, Shirley thrived in the company of others. She had a natural gift for bringing people together, whether through family gatherings, community events, or simple conversations that could turn strangers into friends. And, if you were on the receiving end of one of those phone conversations, you would be blessed.

Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Odean Swann, who was the love of her life.

Those left to cherish fond memories of Shirley are, her children, Mark, Tammy, Derrick, and Jeffrey of Sanford NC; two sisters, Veronica Watson and Darla Watson, both of Lemon Springs, NC; one brother, Cornell Watson (Angela) of Sanford; her grandchildren, RayShawn, Whitney, Brandon, Dequon, Elijah, and Hannah; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends, who will carry her fiery spirit and warm laugher forever.

Though she may no longer walk among us, her spirit lives on in every life she touched. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.

Please keep the family and friends of Ms. Shirley Swann, in your thoughts and prayers.
