Mr. Rufus Nathaniel Thomas, 80, of Vass, North Carolina entered into eternal rest on Friday, December 29, 2023.
Rufus Nathaniel Thomas of Vass, North Carolina, left this world on December 29, 2023, leaving behind memories that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.
Born in Vass, on July 05, 1943, to Wenona (Charles) and James Alton Thomas, Rufus was one of four boys, including James (Jimmy), Aubrey (Bobby), and Sam. He moved to New York City with his family as a teenager, and lived in Brooklyn for 40+ years before returning to home to North Carolina, where he lived until his passing.
He married twice and had a total of four children: Rufus. Jr. and Eunice from his first marriage to Phyllis Jenkins; and Sheila and Michele, from his second marriage to Vivian (Fitch) Thomas. He is survived by his children, Sheila Thomas, Michele Thomas, and Eunice Thomas, his brothers and their partners, and extensive network of family and friends.
Known as “Butch," “Big Rufus," or "Nat" depending on who you ask, Rufus was known for his charismatic personality and infectious smile. He didn't have a lot, but he worked hard and on his own terms for everything he had. He never met a stranger. He had an incredible knack for bringing joy to every room he entered, no matter how his favorite sports teams – the NY Giants. NY Knicks, or NY Mets were doing. He was a big nerd – he loved history, coin and stamp collecting. Whether through his belief in right and wrong, his love for music, silly jokes and knack for storytelling. or his everyday support for his community as a friend, neighbor, Boy Scout leader and, as an active and dedicated member of Fryes Chapel, he touched countless lives.
Rufus' warm laughter and zest for life will be missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Please keep the family and friends of Mr. Rufus Nathaniel Thomas in your thoughts and prayers.
Arrangements are entrusted to McLeod Funeral Home of Sanford, North Carolina.
