Phillip Hancock Jr Obituary

Mr. Phillip Hancock Jr., 72, of Jackson Springs entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.   


Phillip Hancock, Jr., age 72, of Jackson Springs, North Carolina, was born on September 21, 1951, to the late Phillip Hancock Sr. and Sarah Lee Easterling. He entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, North Carolina.


Phillip was raised in Southern Pines, North Carolina, where he graduated from Pinecrest High School. During his high school years, Phillip excelled as a multi-sport athlete. Throughout high school, he participated in football, basketball, and track and field. Phillip contributed significantly to the success of each team, earning All-Conference and All-State status in track and field  and basketball. As a starting point guard, he led his 1970-1971 team to become state champions. Phillip’s achievements extended beyond the courts and fields as he continued his education at Sandhills Community College. He was elected as a Judicial Chairman with voting privileges in the Senate as part of the school’s student court. While attending Sandhills Community College, he was also a contributing member of their 1972 basketball team.


Phillip worked for Proctor Silex for 39 years and Pine Needles Resort for 38 years, where he affectionately became known as  ̈Captain Phil.” Phillip was extremely hardworking and dedicated during his employment. His passion and love for his job contributed to his team’s overall success and earned him professional recognition in his field.


He loved spending time with his friends and family. Any moment he could spend with his grandchildren, always brought a smile to his face. He was a loving father, husband, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Phillip was no stranger to a good party and acknowledging the simple joys in life. One of his favorite things to do was having a good meal with his wife. He enjoyed watching detective  shows and Jeopardy. His favorite sports team was the Duke Blue Devils.


Forever left to cherish his fond memories is his loving wife of twelve years, Rhonda Hancock of Jackson Springs, NC; three brothers, James Herman Hancock of Southern Pines, NC, Theodore  ̈Teddy ̈ Hancock (Linda) of Cusseta, AL, and Thomas JC Hancock of New Jersey; one aunt, Annie White of Southern Pines; his children, Nicole Hancock, Shanda McLaughlin, Phillip Hancock III (Tasha), Morris Hancock (Floricita), and Carlos Smith; his stepchildren, Nakish Payne (Derrick), Barry Smith, Tylon Smith (Raquel), and Nicole Champman (Anthony); a host of  nieces and nephews who loved him dearly; fourteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two special friends, Mary Spell and James “Jimmy Jack” Jackson.


Phillip was preceded in death by his loving parents, two sisters, Lily Mae Hancock and Frances
Easterling, and five brothers, Amos Hancock, Walter Hancock, Ronald Easterling, Michael
Easterling, and Anthony “Pete” Hancock.
