Ms. Mary Sue Gillespie, 85, of West End, North Carolina entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
Mrs. Mary Sue Gillespie was born on May 11, 1940, to the late Clarence and Bertha Gillespie in Hoke County, North Carolina. She began her education at White Oak School in Hoke County. The family moved to Moore County, North Carolina, where she continued her education at Vineland School in West End, North Carolina.
Mary later met and married Mr. Curtis Smitherman.
Mary confessed Christ at an early age. She was a faithful and loyal member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in West End for over 50 years. She loved ushering you in with that amazing smile. She moved her membership and became an honored member at Christway Deliverance Church in the Eastwood Community of West End, until the church closed. Mary found her last great church love at Restoring Hope and Deliverance Ministries in Jackson Springs, NC. Mary truly enjoyed having church, her church family, and church functions out of town.
Mary worked at Pinehurst Dry Cleaners until it closed. She then worked at Stanley Furniture until becoming a great homemaker, cook, and family babysitter.
Mary enjoyed cooking, shopping, family get-togethers, bowling, and, her absolute favorite, gardening. Many days, you could look for her and find her outside humming away in the flower garden. She always loved giving encouraging words of wisdom and family knowledge. Every gathering was a celebration with her favorite home-cooked meal.
On Saturday, May 17, 2025 Mary transitioned to her new heavenly home. She was preceded in death by her husband Curtis, her two sons, Nathaniel “Charlie” and John “Charles,” her grandson, Storm, two sisters, Rosa Lee and Annie Mae, and two brothers, Clarence, Jr., and Howard.
Mary leaves to mourn and forever love, her daughter, Kathy; her sons, Nelson and Jasper; thirteen grandchildren, Chavonia, Charmaine, Jermaine, Shelton, Reniqua, Jason, Rakisha, Tia, Michelle, Aaron, Justin, Shaqueria, and Jerrell; thirty-three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, Jordan; four brothers, Roland (Onnie), David, James (Lois), and Johnny; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Please keep the family and friends of Ms. Mary Sue Gillespie in your thoughts and prayers.
