Ms. Mary Alfreda Chavis, 81, of Southern Pines, North Carolina entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
The sun danced with exhilaration over the home of the late Norman and Evelyn Chavis in Moore County, North Carolina, on the morning of May 16, 1943. Alfreda became a beacon of light and strength, illuminating the lives of all who knew her.
Alfreda’s journey began in the vibrant community of Moore County, where she excelled academically and athletically. A proud graduate of the West Southern Pines School class of 1961, she served as class president and showcased her talent on the basketball court. She attended Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC, where her passion for service eventually led her to a remarkable career in the food service industry.
Starting as a waitress at the Southland Hotel, Alfreda’s dedication and hard work propelled her through the ranks. She became the first African American female food service manager at a 5-star hotel in Moore County, during the time of segregation, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations. Her tenure at Pinehurst Resort Hotel, Whispering Pines Country Club, and later at Bell Meade Retirement Community, exemplified her commitment to excellence and her love for serving others. After over 30 years in the industry, she retired but continued to give back to her community and the residents in Southern Pines as a tax preparer during tax season.
A lifelong Trinity AME Zion Church member, Alfreda was deeply involved in her faith community, serving on various auxiliaries, including the Senior Choir, Board of Stewards, Usher Board, and Vacation Bible School Committee. Her unwavering spirit and dedication to her church were a testament to her character and her love for God.
Alfreda was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Norman and Evelyn Chavis, her brothers, Thurman and Donnie Chavis, and her cherished cat, Casper.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience, cherished by her son, Marcus Chavis, whom she affectionately called “baby boy” of Washington, DC. She is also survived by her sisters, Carolyn Chavis and Alyce Caldwell of Southern Pines, NC; her nieces and nephew, Janet McSwain (Donnie) of Southern Pines, NC, Gaylia Smith (Eric) of Durham, NC, and Andre (Angie) of West End, NC; along with several great-nieces and great-nephews, a host of other relatives, and special friends. Extended family: Shelia Scarborough and her family, Garret Edens, Brent Edwards, PJ, Curtis, and Cynthia Robinson. Special thanks to her tribe, who were always present and supported her at every event: Peggie and Will Caple, Cynthia Ann McDonald, Joyce Jackson, Laura and Thomas Lucas, Jackie and Jay Sloan, and Betsy Harris. Special thanks to Andre and “Cookie,” who were dedicated and loving caregivers.
Alfreda, lovingly known as “Chief” by her hotel staff, “Aunt Pete,” “Pink,” “Flossy,” and “Free Free,” will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her warmth, kindness, and indomitable spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
Rest in peace, dear Alfreda. Your legacy of love and service will continue to inspire us all.
