Luvenia (Chalmers) Gilchrist-Jones Obituary

Mrs. Luvenia (Chalmers) Gilchrist-Jones, 92, of Cameron, North Carolina entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at UNC Medical Center, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Luvenia Jones, affectionately known as “LJ,” “Madea,” and “Auntie Lu,” was born on August 30, 1933, to Doctor Chalmers and Pauline Pearson Chalmers. She transitioned peacefully, surrounded  by love, leaving behind a legacy of faith, strength, and devotion to family on December 31, 2025.

She was a graduate of Johnsonville High School in Cameron, NC. She retired from Moen after many years. She was a faithful member of Johnsonville Community Church Inc., where she served  on the Usher Board, Lay Council, Life Member, Stewardess Board, and as a Class Leader.

Luvenia was the heart of her family—a matriarch whose presence could be felt the moment she entered a room. She was known for her wisdom, her warm spirit, and her ability to love deeply and  unconditionally. Her home was always a place of welcome, laughter, and care.

Affectionately called Grandma by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Luvenia poured love into every generation of her family. She believed strongly in togetherness, respect, and prayer,  and she instilled those values in all who were blessed to know her. Her life was a living testimony of perseverance, humility, and grace.

Luvenia was preceded in death by her parents, Doctor Chalmers and Pauline Pearson Chalmers, her husband, Vernon Gilchrist and son, Vincent Gilchrist, her husband, Hubert Jones and her  beloved grandsons, Shawn, Jordan, Jonathan and Kolson, six brothers, Edwin Chalmers, Doctor Chalmers Jr., Grant Chalmers, Leonard Chalmers, Thurman Chalmers, and Lermond“Pete”  Chalmers, and two sisters, Mary Eunice Chalmers Cameron and Esther Lucas.

Those left to cherish fond memories of Luvenia are, her loving children, her daughters, Joyce Porter (Edsel), Gwendolyn, Priscilla, and Sandra; her son, Perry; her grandchildren, Greg Porter  (LaWanda), Rolando McLeod (Kimaada), Marcus Henderson, Andre Alexander, Shawnta Cummings (Jomall), Alan Alexander (Rina), Marquelle Turner-Gilchrist, Laron Gilchrist and Veneisha  Darby; her great-granddaughters, Alese Guion and Lavona Porter, and a host of other great-grandchildren.

In addition, she leaves to cherish her memory her loving sisters, Irene Murchison (Dwight) and Mable Sanders; her sisters-in-law, Ellen Brewington, Shirley Gilchrist, Laura Chalmers, Mary Jones,  and Bernice Lucas; her special daughters, Mary Jay, Marcia Beasley, Priscilla McCallum, and Arlene McMillian; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, Luvenia’s spirit lives on through the generations she nurtured, the lessons she taught, and the love she gave so freely.

Please keep the family and friends of Mrs. Luvenia (Chalmers) Gilchrist-Jones in your thoughts and prayers.

Arrangements are entrusted to McLeod Funeral Home of Sanford, North Carolina.
