For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. (Second Timothy 4: 6-7)
God called Larry R. Smith to his heavenly home on July 17, 2025, at the age of 75. He passed away peacefully at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, NC. Larry was born on November 16, 1949, to the late Raymond C. and Hazel Hand Smith.
He received his high school diploma from Burgaw High School in Burgaw, NC. After graduation, he moved to Sanford, NC, to find work while living with his brother, the late Raymond H. Smith (Smitty), and his wife, Margie. While living in Sanford, he was employed by several companies, which included Allied Chemical. Whenever he was not on his “public job”, Larry would always find small jobs laying bricks, which he loved doing.
Partnering with the late Milton Burch, they started Smith and Burch Masonry. As Master Brick Layers, they built homes, churches, barber shops, motels, and any other things constructed of bricks. As a Master Brick Layer, his signature work included the Broadway Veterans Memorial Park in Broadway, NC.
While a member of Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church in Bear Creek, NC, Larry was given a Humanitarian Award for services in the community. He earned the Dialysis Clinic Hero Award for Outstanding Bravery and Leadership. These were just a few examples of his character. Larry was a loving and kind-hearted person with a heart of gold. Playing pool and fishing were two of his favorite pastimes.
He leaves to cherish his memories his son, Larry Raymond Smith, of Bear Creek, NC; his daughter, Crystal Wadell, of Siler City, NC; four grandchildren, Zeilan Smith, Neah, Myah, and Riley Waddell, all of Siler City; two sisters, Jacklin “Jackie” Smith Stanford of Willard, NC, Hazel “Louise” Tysor (Winfred) of Sanford, NC; a sister-in-law, Margie Smith of Sanford; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
