Mrs. Khaleelah EL-Bey, 94, of Southern Pines, North Carolina (formerly of Brooklyn, New York) entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care in West End, North Carolina.
Khaleelah El-Bey, also known as Mary Walker Monroe, was born October 27, 1930, to the late Henry and Almeaner Walker in Washington, DC.
Khaleelah received her education at Cool Springs in Laurinburg, NC, and graduated from the Laurinburg Institute. She played basketball all four of her high school years and moved to New York after graduation.
In the early 1950s, she married the late Allen Monroe, and that union birthed the late Hakeem El-Bey (also known as Louis Monroe), the late Mary “Helen” Monroe, Justice Malachi Melchizedek El-Bey (also known as Lonnie Monroe), and Buhdah Eloheim Tariq El-Bey (also known as Henry Monroe). Khaleelah worked for 25 years and retired from Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company, now JP Morgan Chase Company.
Khaleelah was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe Walker, Matthew Miller (also known as Junior Walker), Ellis Walker, and Mikal El-Bey (also known as Jimmy Walker), and one sister,
Margaret “Maggie” Walker.
Those left to cherish fond memories are her two sons, Justice El-Bey of Charlotte, NC and Buhdah El-Bey, of Southern Pines, NC; one daughter-in-love, Yolanda Monroe (Hakeem’s wife) of
Brooklyn, NY; one sister, Allie Ray (Thomas), of Southern Pines; two sisters-in-love, Pauline Walker of Southern Pines, and Gail Walker of Stone Mountain, GA; five grandchildren, Tariq Witlow, of
Allentown, PA, Danielle Monroe of Newark, NJ, Alexander Monroe of Brooklyn, and Latoya and Latasha Moses, both of Jamaica Queens, NY; two great-grandchildren, Jayden and Kayla; and a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
