Mrs. Helen Gertrude (Charles) Hines, 89, of Southern Pines, North Carolina, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at First Health Hospice & Palliative Care in Pinehurst.
Helen Gertrude Charles Hines was born on April 2, 1934, to the late David and Katie Charles in Pinehurst, NC. She departed this life on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the Firsthealth Hospice and Palliative Care in Pinehurst, NC.
Helen graduated from West Southern Pines High School in 1953 and worked at the Elks Lodge as a residential housekeeper until her retirement in 1996. For most, this would have become a time for rest and relaxation, but for Helen, this is when she truly began to live her best life.
She was sure to take advantage of a field trip with her grandchildren or an opportunity to get her special backseat spot on family trips. At her pinnacle, you could find Helen working in her yard, up on her roof repairing a leak, under the hood, changing the oil and doing maintenance on her 1971 Ford Pinto, or throwing a line at the fish pond. There was NEVER a dull moment with Helen; she was ALWAYS the life of the party. Finding Helen and striking up a conversation was a sure way to get one if you wanted a good laugh. She will be GREATLY missed!
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her brother, David “Billy” Charles; two sisters, Beulah Martin and Shelia Charles; son-in-law, Phillip McLellan; nephew, Willard Martin Jr., and a special fur baby “Tink.”
She leaves to cherish her fond memories, her only child, Velma McLellan; two granddaughters, Glenisha (Rayvon Smith) and Tianna (Delmar Hailey); four great-grandchildren, Raylen and Rayvon McLellan-Smith and Demari and Demeir Hailey; four nephews, Jimmie Morrison (Niecey), Tony Charles (Kelly), Ronnie Martin (Kirsten), and Kwantre Charles; four nieces, Marie Martin
(Rodney), Dionne Charles, Latasha Charles, and Debra Martin; a special sister-in-law, Pauline Charles; step-grandchildren, Phillip “Peabody” McLellan (Willette), Vana Barber, Tangela Upchurch, and Corey Franklin; and a host of other close family and friends.
