Dorothy Mae (Headen) Lutz Obituary

Mrs. Dorothy Headen Lutz, 86, of Southern Pines entered into eternal rest on Friday, January 12, 2024, at TerraBella Southern Pines in Southern Pines.

Dorothy Mae (Headen) Lutz, born to the late Victor T. Headen and Myrtis P. Crisco on February 2, 1937, peacefully departed on Friday, January 12, 2024, at Terra Bella Retirement Home in Southern Pines, North Carolina. She graced the world with her presence, leaving an indelible mark on the lives she touched through her resilience,  passion, and unwavering commitment.

Dorothy began her educational journey at Our Lady of Victory Catholic School and graduated from West Southern Pines High School in 1955. While at West Southern Pines High, she was an  active member of the high school basketball team, showcasing her athletic skills. Dorothy furthered her education at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she earned  a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and minored in French. Dorothy was a proud alumnus and a dedicated supporter of numerous Historically Black Colleges and Universities  (HBCUs).

In December 1957, Dorothy became a member of the distinguished sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Gamma Chapter at Johnson C. Smith University.  This significant milestone  marked the commencement of her unwavering dedication to sisterhood and service, which she would uphold throughout her life. In 1985, her profound commitment to the sorority’s mission was  further strengthened when she, along with 14 other members known as the Sandhills Sisters, joyously became charter members of the Omicron Omega Omega chapter in Southern Pines, North  Carolina. Beyond her sorority involvement, Dorothy had a profound impact on the field of education. She devoted over four decades to shaping young minds, teaching at institutions such as  Leake Street High School, West Southern Pines High, Southern Pines Elementary, Crofton Kentucky Elementary School, Vineland Elementary, and Vass-Lakeview Elementary.

Dorothy profoundly loved various activities that brought her joy and fulfillment. She enjoyed traveling, and her adventurous spirit led her to explore different parts of the country, creating cherished  memories that will resonate eternally. Dorothy also found delight in playing bingo, participating in football games, and attending various social events. Whether cheering at a football  game or mingling with others at social gatherings, Dorothy enthusiastically embraced every moment. Her vibrant presence and zest for life left a lasting impact on all who enjoyed sharing these  experiences with her.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Sgt. Donald Thomas Lutz Sr., son, Donald Thomas Lutz Jr., and her siblings, Charles Clinton Headen (twin), Doris Elizabeth (Headen) Watson,  and Victor Headen Jr.

She is fondly remembered and survived by her two daughters, Donna Maria (Lutz) Hewlin (Eddie Gregory) of Durham, NC, and Benita Ann Lutz of Southern Pines, NC. In addition, she leaves  behind six grandchildren - Katrina Lutz (Kendell) of Clayton, NC; Sascha Lutz of Friedberg, Germany; Victoria (Lutz) Grose (William) of Friedberg, Germany; Donald T. Lutz III of Brisbane,  Australia; Leroy Jones (Ashley) of Hiram, GA, and Vernon Jones of Southern Pines, NC. Her legacy extends to four great-grandchildren: Jayla Miles, Tailor Miles, Mackenzie Miles, Liam Grose,  and TylerJones. Furthermore, she is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and her faithful friend, Jesse Fuller.
