Mr. Clee Cornett Chavis, 58, of Southern Pines, North Carolina entered into eternal rest on Monday, December 22, 2025, at FirstHealth Moore Regional in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
On a beautiful day in April 15, 1967, Clee Cornett Chavis was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Southern Pines, North Carolina, to proud parents, Peggie Chavis & Curtis Chavis (who preceded him in death). Clee entered eternal rest on Monday, December 22, 2025, at FirstHealth of the Carolinas in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Clee attended Southern Pines Elementary and Middle Schools and Pinecrest High School up to 11th grade. He received his High School Diploma from Sandhills Community College.
Clee had a love of horses that he and his two older brothers got from their father, Curtis, who taught them to exercise horses at Micky Walsh’s farm, where Stoney Brook races were held for many years. When Clee left Southern Pines, he worked at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore, Maryland, for many years as an exercise rider and outrider, until two hip replacements in as many years prevented him from riding. He returned home two years ago where he remained until his death.
Trinity AME Zion Church was the church he grew up in, and he was one of the first acolytes used there as a youth. He continued attending Trinity whenever he was in town. He especially liked the outside services the last two years. Clee had a strong faith in God and in his Son, Jesus the Christ.
Those left to cherish fond memories of Clee are, his mother, Peggie Caple and step-father, William Caple of the home; a son, Cody C. Chavis McDowell of Millville, NJ; a daughter, Bianca Chavis of Rocky Mount, NC; his grandchildren, MyAngel and Corey Chavis of Millville; his brothers, Steve Carter (who proceeded him in death), Tyron Chavis and Shawn Chavis, all of Southern Pines; his sisters, Halona C. Elliott (Steven) of Port St. Lucie, FL, Raven Bruno Irizarry (Eric) of Staunton, VA, and Katerie Bruno of Maryland; his nieces, Tiffany Elliott of Virginia, and Amber Elliott of Charlotte, NC; a nephew, Caleb Elliott of Austin, TX; his significant other Eshelle Bernabe; and other relatives and friends.
