Mr. Carlton Garfield Thompson, 83, of Southern Pines, North Carolina entered into eternal rest on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
Deacon Carlton Garfield Thompson, the beloved son of the late Bishop Carlton Thompson and Margaret Monroe Thompson, was born on March 7, 1942, in Pinehurst, NC. He peacefully departed this life on Sunday, June 29, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. From humble beginnings in Pinehurst, he grew to become a pillar in both his community and his congregation, leaving behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and unwavering devotion to God.
He attended public school at Academy Heights School in Taylortown, NC and Our Lady of Victory Catholic School in Southern Pines, NC. He also attended North Carolina A&T University and Sandhills Community College, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Business. Later, he enlisted in the United States Army, working as a Supply Clerk. He fulfilled his time of service with an honorable discharge. Carlton retired from the Department of Corrections after serving for thirty years.
In addition to his professional and military accomplishments, Deacon Carlton Thompson was deeply devoted to his church, Harrington Chapel FWB Church, where he served faithfully for many years. His leadership and spiritual guidance were evident in his role as chairman of the Deacon Board, where he led with humility, wisdom, and a heart for service. Deacon Thompson was also the Sunday School Superintendent, dedicating countless hours to ensuring that Christian Education remained a priority in the life of the church. As a Sunday School Teacher, he inspired generations with his knowledge of scripture and his passion for teaching. His commitment extended to the Trustee Board, where he helped steward the church’s resources with integrity and care. Whenever the Men’s Choir needed support, Deacon Thompson willingly lent his voice, leaving a quiet strength, leadership, and unwavering faith that indelibly marked the church and everyone who had the blessing of serving alongside him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Quevie Thompson.
Those left to cherish fond memories of Deacon Thompson are his wife, Barbara Foster Thompson; one daughter, Stacia Thompson (Victor) of Sumter, SC; one son, Shea Thompson of Raeford, NC; two loving sisters, Roberta Saunders of Pinehurst and Ruth Nolan (Bill) of Stone Mountain, GA; four grandchildren, Donovan Thompson, Xavier Thompson, Niasia Thompson and Shayla Thompson; a bonus daughter, Sharon Charles of Greensboro, NC; additionally, he is survived by one uncle, Peter Monroe of Chesapeake, VA; and one aunt, Genevia Monroe of Virginia. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many dear friends.
