Bertha Mae Shields, 68, of Vass, NC, passed away at home surrounded by family on January 6, 2023. She was born on
September 9, 1954, to the late John T. and Parthenia Shields of Vass, NC.
Bertha was a member of New Direction Outreach Ministry in Vass, NC. She grew up passionate about cooking, gardening,
fishing, music, and sports. She loved spending her spare time fishing, watching sports with her sons, cooking, and traveling
with her daughter and grandkids.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Lamont Shields.
Surviving is a daughter, Evelyn Shields of Southern Pines, NC; sons, James Shields of Vass, NC, Terrence Hancock of Greensboro, NC, and Bryant Shields of Vass, NC; a son-in-
law, Murdock Leach of Southern Pines, NC; a daughter-in-law, Brynette Shields of Vass, NC; her sisters, Linnie Saunders of Pinebluff, NC, Mary Robinson of Johnsonville, NC, Shelia
Winston of Carthage, NC, Aleen Herring of Vass, and Gloria Shields of Garner, NC; her brothers, Melvin Malloy Sr., of Whispering Pines, NC, Willie Malloy of Carthage, NC, Thomas
Junior Shields of Vass, NC and Larry Shields of Carthage, NC; her grandchildren, Shawn and Bianca Leach of Southern Pines, NC, Mya Shields of High Point, NC, C’Aundre Boxley of
WV, Nyona and Zaquan Shields of Winston Salem, NC, Shani Jackson of Carthage, NC, and Logan Gillum of Vass, NC; her Great grandchildren, My’Seir Yancey, Lil C’Aundre, Jaire, and
Jayce Jackson; a special niece, Yolanda Vandunk; a special nephew, Maurice Shields, and many more relatives.
*The family will receive visitors at 536 J. Burns Road, Vass, NC, from the hours of 1pm - 7pm daily. At the family's request everyone that enters the home must be masked.*
