Bennie "Tank" McCallum Obituary

Mr. Bennie "Tank" McCallum, 85, of Southern Pines, North Carolina entered into eternal rest on Friday, March 29, 2024, at FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care in West End, North Carolina.

Benjamin Franklin McCallum (“Bennie,” “Tank”) was born to the late John Willie and Edna White McCallum on August 30, 1938, in Southern Pines, North Carolina. He transitioned to reward from earthly labor on March 29, 2024, at the FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care in West End, North Carolina, at the age of 85. He was the third of nine siblings.

Bennie was educated at West Southern Pines Elementary and High School. In school, he played on the basketball team and was a member of the school band, playing the trumpet and drums. It is not known how he got the nickname Tank, but as all knew him, he was called Tank or the shortened name Bennie until his death.

From an early age, he earned extra money along with the other young men his age as a caddy at Mid Pines Country Club & Hotel. He developed a lifelong love for golf. His favorite golfer was Tiger Woods, but he also looked at other golfers and enjoyed the golf game from an early age. His passion for golf was so strong that he would play it constantly throughout his life in all the areas he resided in, such as New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Southern Pines, and North Carolina. He also played in areas he didn’t reside in and on some of the top premier courses. He was so good at the game and helped so many of the golfers that he caddied for that a lot of them would always say that if he had a sponsor, he could play professionally on the pro tour circuit. In New York, he also taught golf to underprivileged youth.

After leaving Southern Pines at a young age, Benjamin embarked on a new chapter in Brooklyn, New York. He worked as an auto car carrier and later for the New York City Department of Transportation, a job he retired from in 2003. After retirement, he returned to his roots in Southern Pines, North Carolina, seeking the comfort of the country life he had always loved. He had five children with his lifetime mate, the late Ms. Mabel Burns. He was a loving and devoted father/grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Mr. Javaughn Burns, two sisters, Ms. Susie Payne and Margie Threadgill, two brothers, Mr. Leonard McCallum and Mr. Robert McCallum and two grandchildren, Daniek Burns and Julissa Burns.

Bennie leaves to mourn and cherish his memories, a son, Mr. Gary Burns of Brooklyn, New York; three daughters, Ms. Tonya Taylor and Ms. Tara Burns of New York, New York, and Mrs. Sharon Destephano of Charleston, South Carolina; four sisters, Johnnie Mae Mincer of Irvington, New Jersey, Beulah Covington of Hartford, Connecticut, Etta Rose Carter of San Antonio, Texas and Elizabeth Ann Mack of Orangeburg, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Gary Burns, Jr., Dynesha Parker, Daquan Burns and Brittany Burns all of New York, New York; seventeen great-grandchildren; as well as a special nephew and niece, Mr. Anthony (AD) and Iris Dickerson of Southern Pines NC; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Although he has left us, he will live in our hearts and minds until we, too, pass from amongst the living and go home to dwell with our Father God and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We extend our prayers and sincere condolences to family and loved ones of Mr. Bennie McCallum.

Arrangements are entrusted to McLeod Funeral Home of Southern Pines, North Carolina.
