Annie Beatrice (Chalmers) McSwain Obituary

Ms. Annie Beatrice (Chalmers) McSwain, 91, of Aberdeen, North Carolina entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Annie Beatrice Chalmers McSwain was born on January 30, 1934, in Moore County, North Carolina, in the Haw Branch Community, to John Henry Chalmers and Nola Atkins Chalmers. She  was the eighth child of ten, and eight siblings preceded her in death.

Ms. Annie attended Pinckney High School in Carthage, North Carolina. Many years after high school, she worked at Pinehurst Resort and retired after forty-two years of dedicated service.

She was recognized in an article in the PineStraw Magazine in June 2016 titled “The Light in Mrs. Annie—Reflections On Four Decades At The Pinehurst Resort.” The article referred to her as  strikingly tall and stately; she shares the regality of the hotel known as “The Queen of the South.”

While being interviewed for the PineStraw article, Ms. Annie chuckled as she recollected the time Sidney Poitier approached her. He said, “Excuse me. Would you give me permission to give you a hug?”

Material things in life were not of great importance to her. She was much more concerned about the well-being of others. Sometimes, individuals would come to her and say, ”Ms. Annie, I’m  hungry!” She would go into action and share and/or prepare what she had. Encouraging and being supportive were two of her greatest attributes.

Ms. Annie was married to the late Ray Brooks McSwain, who preceded her in death. They were blessed with five children, Helen, Jacqueline, Donnie (Janet), Pamela, and Darryl, who are left to  cherish her memories. Also left to cherish fond memories are, a brother, Reverend Charles Chalmers; her grandchildren: Cedrick, Ryan (Adrianna), Mechea, Jonathan, Janel, and Donnie (April);  several great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
